How to Verify a Home-Based Business on Google Business Profile in Canada

July 21, 20264 min read

You run your business from home. Your customers are out there searching for exactly what you do. But your business doesn't show up on the map, because Google won't verify your profile without a storefront, a sign, or an office you don't have.

I see this all the time with home-based trades. Plumbers, HVAC techs, cleaners, landscapers. The business is real. The work is real. But Google wants proof, and the proof it asks for seems built for businesses with a front door and a logo on the window.

Here's the thing: you can absolutely get verified from home. You just have to do it Google's way. This is the whole process, step by step.

Why Google asks home-based businesses for a video

Google's job is to keep fake businesses off the map. A storefront can prove itself with a sign and a postcard in the mail. You can't. So for most home-based businesses, Google offers one main option: record a video that proves your business exists and that you actually run it.

Annoying? A little. But it's doable in an afternoon, and once it's done, it's done.

Set up your profile right BEFORE you verify

This is where most people shoot themselves in the foot. Before you even think about the video, get the setup right.

Your business is what Google calls a service-area business. You go to your customers, they don't come to you. So when you build your profile, do not show your home address to the public. You enter it for verification, then you hide it, and you set your service areas instead. Pick the cities or postal codes you actually serve. Google lets you add up to 20, and they should all sit within about two hours of driving from home.

Get this wrong, and Google can reject your video for a mismatch between where you filmed and where your profile says you work.

The 3 things your video must show

Google spells this out, and your video needs all three. Miss one, and you're re-recording.

First, where you operate. Film the street signs and landmarks in your own neighbourhood. This confirms your business is based where you said it is. Don't film an empty yard, film things Google can recognize on a map.

Second, proof your business is real. Show your tools, your equipment, your workspace. Branded shirts, business cards, the gear in your van. Whatever a customer would see when you show up at their door.

Third, proof that YOU run it. Unlock your work van, especially if it has your name on it. Do part of a job on camera. Or show a business document with your business name on it, like your provincial business registration, an invoice you sent a customer, or a bill in the business name. In Quebec, your registration from the Registraire des entreprises does the job.

Recording rules most people miss

The video has to be recorded live, from your phone, inside the Google Business Profile app or site. You can't film something nice ahead of time and upload it. One continuous take, no edits, no cuts, at least 30 seconds.

And two things that get videos rejected fast: no faces, yours or anyone else's, and no sensitive info like bank numbers, tax numbers, or ID cards. Plan your shots before you press record. Walk the route once without filming, then do it for real.

What happens after you hit upload

Google reviews the video, and that can take up to 5 business days. If it passes, you're verified and your profile can start showing up in local results and on the map.

If it fails, Google tells you what was missing. Maybe no nearby area was shown, maybe there was no proof you're authorized to run the business. Record a new video that includes everything from your first video PLUS whatever was missing. Don't just film the missing piece on its own.

Rejected more than once? Here's the fix

Some businesses get stuck in a rejection loop even when they did everything right. If that's you, don't keep uploading the same video hoping for a different result.

Tighten up the profile first. Your business name on the profile has to match your documents exactly, no extra keywords stuffed in. Your service areas have to match where you actually filmed. Then try again with a video that leans harder on documents: registration, invoices, anything official with your business name on it. If video keeps failing, Google has an appeal process where you submit your business documents directly, and you can reach their support team through the Business Profile Help Center.

The map pack is worth the hassle

When someone in your area searches "plumber near me" or "heat pump repair," the three businesses in that map box get the calls. Unverified businesses aren't in the running at all. One afternoon of setup and one decent video is the price of entry.
